Types of PVC plasticizers

Jun 08, 2021

1. Fatty acid esters: Fatty acid esters have good low temperature performance, but have poor compatibility with polyvinyl chloride, so they can only be used as cold-resistant auxiliary plasticizers in combination with phthalate esters. The most commonly used varieties are dioctyl adipate and dioctyl sebacate.

2. Phthalic acid esters: Phthalic acid is currently the most widely used main plasticizer. It has many varieties and high output. It has light color, low toxicity, good electrical properties, small volatile parts, and low odor. Features such as general low temperature resistance. At present, the consumption of phthalates accounts for about 80-85% of the total consumption of plasticizers, and the two most commonly used are dioctyl phthalate and dioctyl phthalate.

3. Phosphate esters: Phosphate esters have good compatibility with resins such as polyvinyl chloride, and have good transparency, but they are toxic. They are both plasticizers and flame retardants. Aromatic phosphate esters have poor low temperature performance, while aliphatic phosphate esters have better low temperature performance, but their thermal stability is poor and their durability is not as good as aromatic phosphate esters.

4. Epoxy esters: Epoxy plasticizers are widely used additives in recent years. They can not only absorb the hydrogen chloride released when the polyvinyl chloride resin is decomposed, but also dissolve with the polyvinyl chloride resin, so it is both plasticizing The agent is also a stabilizer. Mainly used as a side plasticizer for PVC products with high weather resistance. The main varieties include epoxy soybean oil, epoxy fatty acid octyl ester and so on.

5. Helium-containing plasticizer: The most widely used chlorine-containing plasticizer is chlorinated paraffin. Chlorinated paraffin is low in price, excellent in electrical properties, and flame retardant, but it has poor compatibility and poor thermal stability. It is only used as a secondary plasticizer.

6. Alkyl sulfonates: This type of plasticizer has good compatibility and can be used as the main plasticizer. If used together with phthalate main plasticizer, the effect will be better. It has good mechanical properties, electrical properties, and weather resistance, but poor cold resistance.

7. Polyol esters: Polyol esters mainly include dipentaerythritol ester and glycol phenol. Dipentaerythritol ester has low volatility, good extraction resistance, is difficult to thermally decompose and oxidize, and has good electrical insulation properties. It is an excellent heat-resistant plasticizer. It is suitable for high-temperature wire insulation formulations, but it is expensive. Although glycol ester has good cold resistance, it has darker color and greater volatility.

8. Polyesters and trimellitates: Polyester plasticizers generally have low plasticization efficiency, high viscosity, poor processability and low temperature properties, but low volatility, low migration, oil and soapy water resistance Extracted, so it is a good durable plasticizer. Usually need to be used together with phthalate main plasticizer.
